Privacy Fence Styles We Build
- Cedar dog-ear — the classic 6 ft privacy fence. Treated posts, treated bottom rails, cedar pickets. Long-lasting and traditional.
- Board-on-board — pickets alternating on both sides of the rail. No gaps between pickets even when the wood shrinks. Best when you want maximum privacy and a clean look from both sides.
- Shadow-box — pickets alternating in a pattern that’s symmetric from both sides. Slightly more airflow than board-on-board, often the right call when wind is an issue.
- Horizontal slat / modern — horizontal pickets, contemporary look. Cedar or treated pine.
- Vinyl privacy — pre-assembled vinyl panels in white, tan, or woodgrain. No painting, no staining, no rot. Costs more upfront, lasts dramatically longer.
- Combination wood + lattice top — 6 ft solid privacy with 1 ft lattice on top for an 8 ft fence that feels lighter.
How We Set Posts (and Why It Matters)
Most privacy fence problems — leaning panels, sagging gates, wobble — trace back to posts that weren’t set right. Our standard:
- Below frost line — in McNairy County that’s about 24 inches minimum, deeper for taller fence or windy sites
- Set in concrete — ready-mix or sacrete around the post, not just dirt or gravel
- Properly braced corners and gate posts — gate posts especially carry weight that pulls them out of plumb if they’re not deeper and reinforced
- Plumb in two directions before the concrete sets
- 8 ft on-center spacing for 6 ft cedar, closer for taller or heavier fence
Gates — Where Most Fences Fail
Gates are the moving parts. Wrong hinges, undersized gate posts, or no diagonal bracing = a gate that sags and scrapes within a year. We use heavy-duty hinges sized for the gate weight, gate posts set deeper than line posts, and a diagonal brace running from the upper hinge corner to the lower latch corner. Walk gates and drive gates both get this treatment.
What to Think About Before You Call
- Linear footage — rough estimate of how much fence you need. Pace it off if you can.
- Height — 6 ft is most common; 8 ft for maximum privacy; 4 ft for picket-style or pool code
- Gates — how many walk gates? Drive gates? Where?
- Material preference — or ask us; cedar is the default value, vinyl is the long-term play
- HOA covenants — some neighborhoods restrict height, style, or material
- Underground stuff — sprinkler lines, septic, gas, electric. We call 811 before any digging.
